Effects of cultural nursing course to enhance cultural competence of nursing students in Korea

Abstract

|
Purpose: With the recent rapid change into a multi-cultural society in Korea, cultural competence is emphasized as a core nursing competency. It aimed to know the effect of cultural nursing course to enhance cultural competence of nursing students in Korea.
Methods: It is one group pre and post comparison study. The subjects were 69 nursing students of Dongyang University, in Korea who attended cultural nursing course in 2015, of which 62 students responded to the survey tool. Duration of the cultural nursing course consisted of 2 hours a week for 13 weeks. The methods of course include small group activities, discussion and presentation, experiential learning, reflective activities and lectures. Nursing students' cultural competence was measured with the Cultural Competence Scale for Korean Nurses of 33 items with 7-point Likert scale at pre- and post-course. The goodness-of-fit test was done to check if there were outlier or inlier items.
Results: There was an increase of not only total cultural competence scores of students but also scores of each category of cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural sensitivity, and cultural skill after finishing the cultural nursing course (P <0.001). There was no difference of cultural competence by gender (P < 0.0001). There was no item of outlier or inlier. Four items out of 33 were differential items by gender.
Conclusion: This cultural nursing course was found to be effective in enhancing cultural competence of nursing students in the University. Therefore, the education program developed in this study will be able to be extended to other nursing universities in Korea.
